Corporate Greed Is Killing Our Pets
Pet food suppliers in the United States are a multi-billion dollar cash cow that is largely self-regulated. The FDA is suppose to be the overseer in this industry, but as usual, they are mostly "out to lunch". In her overview of the pros and cons of the pet food industry, Why All the Fuss About Cats, Franny Syufy gives an in-depth analysis of how the pet food companies are regulated and their culpability for this latest recall.
Taking care of our cat is a full time job, and expensive to boot. Just this week we spent close to $300 on blood tests, an exam, a supplement for his skin that the vet deemed necessary, and some new prescription dry cat food, Purina NF for his kidney function. He had been on Science Diet CD for the last few years, and now that brand is suspect. Of course, the question in our minds is, "Has he been eating poisoned food?", closely followed by, "What about this new Purina NF food the vet just prescribed?".
With the price of my vet bills stacked up against the price of Newman's Own pet food that is NOT under any recall, I think I am going to opt for the Newman's Own and take my chances with Rocky's health by erring on the side of caution. It isn't all about the money. It is my responsibility to take the best care of any pet I have, and that includes his diet. I just hope it isn't too late.
For years, we have all been whining about the quality of our products and that so much of it comes from our own US companies that have opted to buy labor and commodities from other countries rather than from our own. If this can be happening in the pet food industry, what makes you think your own human supply of food is any more safe? Starting today, we should all make a concerted effort to "buy American" again. Check out the site American Made: All Products and Services Made in the USA.
That doesn't mean you can let your guard down even on products and food made in the USA. We all need to be more vigilant about every aspect of our lives and the people we care for and about. Including "cat people."
